Base pay range

$70,000.00/yr - $85,000.00/yr

PLEASE NOTE: This hybrid position requires renewable energy site visits and time in our offices located in Montpelier, VT; White River Junction, VT and Brunswick, ME.

Position Overview

The Development Engineer plays a critical role in the early- to mid-stage development of innovative commercial solar projects bringing them from origination through Notice to Proceed (NTP). This individual combines technical expertise with strategic thinking to evaluate sites, support interconnection, and drive projects through permitting and design. The ideal candidate is passionate about renewable energy and excited to contribute to impactful, real-world solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct feasibility studies, site evaluations, and preliminary system designs for commercial solar projects.
  • Perform energy production modeling using tools like PVsyst, Helioscope, or similar software.
  • Support the interconnection process by coordinating with utilities, preparing applications, and evaluating grid capacity.
  • Work closely with development, engineering, and construction teams to optimize project designs for efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
  • Assist with permitting and regulatory compliance, ensuring projects meet local, state, and federal requirements.
  • Review and refine technical specifications, equipment selection, and design documentation.
  • Collaborate with finance teams to provide technical insights for project financial modeling and risk assessment.
  • Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of industry trends, technological advancements, and regulatory changes affecting commercial solar development.
  • Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, or related field) or equivalent experience.
  • 2+ years of experience in solar project development, engineering, or related fields.
  • Proficiency in solar design software (Helioscope, PVsyst, AutoCAD, etc.).
  • Strong understanding of electrical systems, interconnection processes, and utility coordination.
  • Experience with permitting and regulatory requirements for commercial solar projects.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with a passion for renewable energy and sustainability.
