Job summary

Severn Trent is seeking an Innovation Technical Expert with a background in process engineering or process science to advance digital twin capabilities for sewage and sludge treatment. The role combines process modelling, data integration and operational forecasting to drive practical improvements across multiple sites.

You will work with process engineering, data and operations teams, travel to site as needed, and operate from our Head Office in Coventry.

Qualifications

• Experience as a process engineer or process scientist with strong knowledge of wastewater and sludge treatment processes.
• Proven experience in wastewater treatment modelling: developing, calibrating, validating and applying mechanistic models.
• Ability to interpret laboratory data and sensor monitoring to drive practical improvements.
• Knowledge of greenhouse gas emissions from wastewater treatment, especially nitrous oxide, and mitigation opportunities.
• Strong ability to manage multiple projects within an innovation programme and communicate complex ideas clearly.

Responsibilities

• Investigate wastewater and bioresources site operations to develop detailed process flow diagrams.
• Identify gaps between existing and required monitoring and equipment for digital twin functionality.
• Develop mechanistic models accounting for hydraulics and relevant physical, chemical and biological processes.
• Connect process models with operational data to support digital twin capabilities and forecasting.
• Use models for forecasting, scenario assessment and real-time process optimisation.
• Calibrate and validate models against site data to ensure reliability of treatment performance.
• Interpret data to identify constraints and propose improvements to wastewater and sludge treatment.
• Communicate insights to technical and non-technical stakeholders across cross-functional teams.
