University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is hiring a Digital Technology Contracts Counsel. This junior-level role provides legal advice and transactional support on data privacy, information security, and technology purchasing, reporting to the Associate Vice Chancellor, Chief Privacy Officer, and Special Counsel.

The role drafts and negotiates privacy and security terms in university technology agreements and collaborates with IT and legal teams to ensure compliant purchases.

Qualifications

• Licensed to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
• Ability to join the North Carolina State Bar.
• Experience negotiating technology transactions (SaaS, cloud).
• Knowledge of HIPAA, FERPA, GDPR and NIST in contracts.
• Post-baccalaureate degree or equivalent experience required.

Responsibilities

• Draft, review, and negotiate data privacy and information security terms in routine and moderate-risk tech contracts.
• Collaborate with IT, privacy, information security, University Counsel, purchasing, and research admin teams.
• Help senior counsel triage and coordinate legal review of technology purchases.
• Advise units on laws and contracting practices, and train them on contracting.
• Assist in developing contract templates and negotiation playbooks, and help resolve vendor disputes.
