Job summary

b.well is hiring a Staff Engineer to own its scalable FHIR server platform. You will drive architecture, performance, cost, security, and conformance for a consumer health record system used across systems and apps.

This hands-on role requires 8+ years in backend/platform engineering, deep FHIR fluency, and experience with MongoDB at scale. You will lead other engineers, shape the platform, and advance AI-native tooling while maintaining HIPAA compliance.

Qualifications

• 8+ years in backend/platform engineering with population-scale API platform experience.
• Deep FHIR fluency, ideally building or operating a FHIR server.
• Production experience scaling NoSQL databases at real scale.
• Distributed-systems judgment including caching, idempotency, and decomposition of monoliths.
• Experience as technical lead for platforms used by other teams.
• AI-native development with coding agents and reusable AI skills.

Responsibilities

• Own the Platform End to End: architecture, roadmap, production health, and cost; from design reviews to incident response.
• Improve latency and cost via indexing, caching, storage tiering, and service decomposition.
• Own observability, capacity planning, and reliability for the platform.
• Implement consent-based access control and data filtering; multi-tenant isolation.
• Deliver data governance and HIPAA/compliance alignment.
• Close FHIR conformance gaps and support CMS interoperability initiatives.
• Mentor engineers, drive documentation, and enable self-service debugging.
• Represent the platform externally, including open-source engagement.
