Job summary

b.well is seeking a Senior Engineering Manager to lead the Data Interoperability team in the United States. You will drive strategic people leadership while staying close to technical details of FHIR, healthcare APIs, and data pipelines to ensure high-quality architectural decisions.

You will own the people and delivery strategy for a team building real-time data pipelines that connect thousands of health data sources.

Qualifications

• 8+ years in healthcare interoperability or health IT.
• 3+ years directly managing engineering or interoperability teams.
• Experience scaling engineering teams and processes.
• Experience partnering with Product, Clinical, Data Science, and other stakeholders.
• 5+ years with FHIR standards and implementations (FHIR R4).

Position Overview

b.well is seeking a Senior Engineering Manager to lead our Data Interoperability team. This is a strategic leadership role for someone who can operate at both the organizational and technical level: building and scaling a high-performing engineering team, establishing the processes and culture that let that team execute at a high bar, and staying close enough to the technical details of FHIR, healthcare APIs, and data pipelines to make sound architectural calls and represent the team credibly with clinical, product, and executive stakeholders. This leader will own the people and delivery strategy for the team responsible for building and maintaining real-time data pipelines and infrastructure that connect to thousands of healthcare data sources nationwide, bringing together a person's full health record in one place.

What You’ll Do

Team Leadership & People Management

• Build, scale, and lead a team of data and interoperability engineers, including hiring, onboarding, and structuring the team to match growing scope
• Own performance management, career development, and growth planning for direct reports; create clear paths for ICs to grow into senior and staff roles
• Coach engineers and any team leads on technical judgment, communication, and delivery ownership; run the cadence of 1:1s, performance conversations, and promotion advocacy that builds a strong bench
• Establish team culture, working norms, and cross-functional processes that let a growing team scale without losing quality or velocity
• Partner closely with Product, Clinical, Data Science, and other Engineering leaders to define priorities, resolve tradeoffs, and keep interoperability work aligned to company strategy

Technical & Architectural Ownership

• Drive technical strategy and oversee delivery of Patient Access APIs, Provider Directory APIs, and Bulk FHIR APIs in compliance with the CMS Interoperability and Patient Access Final Rule
• Oversee connections to national networks (Carequality, CommonWell, eHealth Exchange, TEFCA) and integrations across a wide range of EMR and HIE/HIN systems
• Guide FHIR R4 and US Core Implementation Guide adoption across all integration points, setting technical standards and architectural patterns for the team
• Oversee design of scalable, real-time data pipelines ingesting, transforming, and exchanging health data from EMRs, HIEs/HINs, wearables, IoT devices, and remote patient monitoring systems, built on Python, Spark, Prefect, Kubernetes, and applied LLMs
• Lead evaluation and selection of interoperability platforms, tools, and vendor partnerships
• Ensure security, compliance (HIPAA, HITECH), and scalability are built into every data and API solution from day one
• Remain hands-on enough to unblock the team on hard technical problems, review key designs, and step in during critical incidents

What We’re Looking For

• 8+ years of experience in healthcare interoperability or health IT, including 3+ years directly managing engineering or interoperability teams
• A track record of scaling engineering teams and processes as an organization grows — hiring, structuring teams, and developing managers and ICs alongside the technical work
• Demonstrated success developing direct reports, including supporting promotions and career growth for engineers and any team leads
• Experience partnering cross-functionally with Product, Clinical, Data Science, and other stakeholders to translate business and regulatory requirements into engineering priorities
• 5+ years of direct experience with FHIR standards and implementations (FHIR R4 required); expert-level knowledge of the FHIR R4 specification and resource models
• Direct experience implementing Patient Access APIs and Bulk FHIR APIs in compliance with CMS regulations, and with HIE/HIN integrations and national networks (Carequality, CommonWell, TEFCA, or similar)
• Experience integrating with multiple EMR systems (5+ different platforms preferred)
• Deep understanding of US Core Implementation Guide, USCDI, and ONC certification requirements
• Proficiency with SMART on FHIR authorization (OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, SMART scopes) and strong knowledge of API security (OAuth 2.0, JWT, mTLS, rate limiting)
• Strong knowledge of HL7 v2.x messaging (ADT, ORM, ORU, etc.) and experience with CDA/C-CDA documents
• Proficiency with message queuing systems (Kafka, RabbitMQ, AWS SQS, Azure Service Bus)
• Strong programming background in at least two of: Python, Java, JavaScript/TypeScript, Go, C#, with proficiency in SQL and NoSQL databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, DynamoDB)
• Comfort operating in ambiguity, driving alignment across diverse stakeholders, and balancing hands‑on technical leadership with people management

The target salary range for this position is $210,000 - $260,000 and is part of a competitive total rewards package including stock options, benefits, and incentive pay for eligible roles. Individual pay may vary from the target range and is determined by a number of factors including experience, location, internal pay equity, and other relevant business considerations. We review all employee pay and compensation programs annually at minimum to ensure competitive and fair pay.
