Job summary

GitLab is seeking a Senior or Staff Backend Engineer for the Database Excellence group. You will build and evolve database automation and PostgreSQL as a service capabilities, using Go to automate the full lifecycle across GitLab's infrastructure, supporting high-throughput, always-on services.

This role is fully remote and collaborative, with opportunities to influence platform-level architecture. You will partner with product management, infrastructure, and other teams, implement improvements

Qualifications

Experience with PostgreSQL in large production environments.
Proficiency with Go for backend services, including design, implementation, testing, and review.
Experience developing Kubernetes operators or similar automation for stateful services.
Comfort with infrastructure as code and core DB operations (HA, replication, backups).

Responsibilities

Design, build, and maintain Go-based automation for the PostgreSQL lifecycle (provisioning, config, upgrades, failover, scaling, decommissioning).
Develop automation that works across IaC tooling and cloud infra; evaluate operator-based approaches.
Use AI agents to build and operate services while keeping context in the repository.
Design automation for high throughput, internet-scale production workloads and ensure reliability.
Integrate compute, storage, networking, IAM, and managed data services into a unified PostgreSQL platform.
