Job summary

GitLab is seeking a Senior or Staff Backend Engineer in the Database Excellence group to design and implement Go-based automation for PostgreSQL lifecycle across GitLab's infrastructure.

You will work closely with partner teams to provision, upgrade, and decommission databases, aligning with safety, reliability, and performance goals in a fully remote environment.

The role emphasizes ownership, collaboration, and driving improvements in a global, async-first team focused on scale and efficiency.

Qualifications

• Professional software engineering experience with PostgreSQL in large, complex environments.
• Proficiency with Go for designing, implementing, testing, and reviewing backend services.
• Experience developing Kubernetes operators or similar automation for stateful services.
• Familiarity with Ruby and ability to read Rails code is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain Go-based automation that manages the full PostgreSQL lifecycle.
• Collaborate with product management, infra, and software delivery teams to ship solutions.
• Evaluate and improve performance, scalability, and data health across production DBs.
• Document automation practices and PostgreSQL operational patterns for engineers.
