Job summary

GitLab is seeking a Staff Backend Engineer for the Core DevOps team. You will provide technical leadership across multiple teams, modernize large monoliths into modular backends, and set architectural standards to enable faster delivery with security and reliability.

Qualifications

• Proven track record leading technical work across multiple teams or broad product areas.
• Deep backend architecture experience with complex apps, services, or platforms.

Responsibilities

• Lead the technical design and delivery of backend initiatives across teams.
• Drive modular backend and platform architecture modernization of monoliths.
• Define and improve API standards, contracts, and testing for reliability and security.
• Establish patterns for dependency management, data ownership, and operational docs.
• Establish Go service patterns and Kubernetes practices for production systems; guide Rust adoption where beneficial.
• Participate in on-call and incident response; turn incidents into improvements.
• Collaborate with Product/Engineering leadership on platform roadmap and trade-offs.
• Mentor senior engineers and promote AI-assisted workflows with guardrails.
