Job summary

Constructive Dialogue Institute (CDI) seeks an early-career Software Engineer to help build the technology behind CDI's learning programs, including Perspectives and AI-powered dialogue practice. You will work with the Senior Technical Lead and Product team, delivering features, fixing bugs, and ensuring reliability.

Mentorship and production support responsibilities grow with experience. You'll work in a stack including TypeScript, React, Next.js, Java, Spring Boot, Python, and AWS, with

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• At least one hands-on engineering project in a shared codebase with code reviews.
• Working foundation in at least one programming language with a demonstrable project.
• Understanding of web app basics: UI, API, data storage/retrieval.
• Ability to read/modify code, test changes, and explain decisions.
• Willingness to learn AI development tools and evaluate outputs critically.
• Clear communication, proactive feedback, and asking for help when blocked.
• Motivation for CDI's mission and education technology impact.

Responsibilities

• Build and improve features for students, instructors, and CDI staff.
• Break product needs into tasks with the Product team and deliver small, tested changes.
• Use AI coding agents to implement features and investigate bugs with code review.
• Diagnose problems by reproducing issues, tracing behavior, and using logs/tests.
• Write and maintain automated tests, verify user-facing behavior, participate in code reviews with accessibility and data protection in mind.
• Monitor and support production systems, contributing toward incident response.
• Contribute to AI-assisted development tools, agents, and integrations at CDI.
• Document learnings, communicate progress, and seek help early when unclear.
