Job summary

The Constructive Dialogue Institute (CDI) is seeking an early-career Software Engineer to help build the technology behind CDI's learning programs. You will work on Perspectives, our online learning platform, and our AI-powered dialogue practice experience, helping students build the skills to bridge divides and giving educators better tools to support their learning.

You'll work directly with and be mentored by our Senior Technical Lead, and collaborate with our Product team.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience in a technical field.
• One hands-on engineering project with code review in a shared codebase.
• Foundations in at least one programming language and ability to explain a project.
• Understanding of web app basics and API communication.
• Ability to read/modify code, test changes, and reason through problems.
• Willingness to learn AI development tools and evaluate their output.
• Clear communication, responsiveness to feedback, and teamwork.
• Motivation for CDI's mission and to build learning tools.

Responsibilities

• Build and improve features for students, instructors, and CDI staff.
• Break product needs into tasks and deliver small, well-tested changes.
• Use AI coding agents to implement features, debug, and test outputs.
• Diagnose problems by reproducing issues, tracing behavior, and using logs.
• Write and maintain automated tests and participate in reviews with accessibility in mind.
• Monitor production systems and contribute to incident response.
• Contribute to tools and practices for AI-assisted development at CDI.
• Document learnings, communicate progress, and ask for help early.
