Job summary

Upstart is seeking a Senior Underwriting Manager for its Home Lending Underwriting team. You will lead a team of mortgage underwriters, translate credit policy into practices, and collaborate with Risk, Compliance, and Product to enhance underwriting workflows and outcomes.

You’ll drive accurate, timely credit decisions, guide complex borrower scenarios, and ensure adherence to investor guidelines and regulatory requirements, while developing talent across the organization.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of residential mortgage underwriting experience.
• 3+ years of people leadership experience.
• Experience evaluating borrower income, assets, credit, collateral, and DTI calculations.
• Experience applying conventional mortgage underwriting guidelines and credit policies.
• Experience interpreting mortgage credit policies and investor guidelines.

Responsibilities

• Lead, coach, and develop a high-performing mortgage underwriting team responsible for accurate, timely decisions.
• Serve as a subject matter expert on residential mortgage underwriting and complex borrower scenarios.
• Ensure decisions align with credit policy, investor guidelines, and regulatory requirements.
• Interpret and operationalize credit policy with Credit Strategy, informing future policy decisions.
• Monitor performance, quality results, and trends to improve decision quality and borrower experience.
• Establish escalation and decision-making practices for complex loan scenarios.
