Upstart is hiring for a senior leadership role in remote settings across the U.S. You will lead a team of mortgage underwriters, ensuring high-quality credit decisions while aligning with credit policy and regulatory requirements.

The role calls for deep expertise in residential underwriting, complex borrower scenarios, and collaboration with Risk, Compliance, and Product to enhance workflows. The position offers remote work with frequent collaboration across teams and a focus on talent

Qualifications

• 7+ years of residential mortgage underwriting experience, including complex borrower scenarios.
• 3+ years of people leadership experience managing mortgage underwriters or underwriting teams.
• Experience evaluating borrower income, assets, credit, collateral, and DTI calculations.
• Experience applying conventional underwriting guidelines and credit policies to loan decisions and exceptions.
• Experience interpreting mortgage credit policies and investor guidelines in a regulated environment.

Responsibilities

• Lead, coach, and develop a high-performing underwriting team delivering accurate, timely credit decisions.
• Act as SME on residential mortgage underwriting and guidance on complex borrower scenarios.
• Ensure decisions adhere to credit policy, investor guidelines, and regulatory requirements.
• Partner with Credit Strategy to interpret policy and improve future decisions.
• Monitor performance, quality, and trends to improve decision quality and borrower experience.
• Collaborate with Product and Engineering to improve underwriting workflows and tools.
• Train and develop underwriting talent across the organization.
