Job summary

Nabu Casa, the organization behind Home Assistant, offers a fully remote Senior Embedded Linux OS Engineer role within the Hardware Team. You will enable, maintain, and improve Home Assistant OS support across Nabu Casa hardware.

As the primary embedded Linux engineer, you will drive Buildroot-based development, BSPs, bootloader configuration, and platform debugging, collaborating with the Hardware Team and Open Home Foundation. A senior, hands-on expert capable of independent work is essential.

Qualifications

Strong embedded Linux experience, including Buildroot or Yocto.
Deep understanding of Linux OS, services, bring-up and platform reliability.
Experience with bootloaders, partition layouts, OTA updates and lifecycle management.
Ability to read/write C/C++ for driver-related work.
Strong Python skills for automation and tooling.
Security hardening practices for embedded OS.
Experience with Home Assistant OS or similar embedded Linux platforms is a plus.

Responsibilities

Maintain and improve Home Assistant OS support for Nabu Casa hardware platforms.
Collaborate with Home Assistant OS contributors and Open Home Foundation to improve platform support.
Support board bring-up activities for new hardware products (Buildroot, BSPs, bootloader).
Optimize OS performance, hardware utilization, stability, and reliability.
Maintain Buildroot-based build infrastructure for reproducible builds.
Investigate and resolve platform-level issues (boot regressions, drivers, power management).
Upstream patches to Linux, U-Boot, Buildroot as needed.
