GitHub’s Elasticsearch team seeks a senior search and data focused engineer to scale and optimize search across Issues, Pull Requests, Projects, and Discussions. You will design and maintain infrastructure, improve index management, and collaborate across teams to deliver reliable, scalable search experiences.

Ideal candidates have 6+ years in software engineering with Go/Python/Java/C++, and proven experience with large‑scale search systems using Elasticsearch or Lucene‑based stacks.

Qualifications

• 6+ years experience in Software Engineering with production code.
• Experience in Go, Python, Java, C/C++, or similar languages.
• Technical leadership experience is a plus.
• Experience building or operating Elasticsearch at scale is preferred.
• Experience with infrastructure as code and OSS tooling.

Responsibilities

• Builds and enhances frameworks and tools to manage infrastructure and achieve scalability.
• Assess capacity needs, plan for growth, and expand offerings to meet needs.
• Serve as first contact for incidents, diagnose outages, and coordinate fixes.
• Ensure security, compliance, and perform upgrades of OSS and OS.
• Establish observability, monitoring, and disaster recovery testing.
• Collaborate with engineers to troubleshoot and optimize performance.
• Contribute to open‑source projects and share best practices with the community.
