Job summary

Chess.com is seeking a Senior Elasticsearch Engineer to own the full lifecycle of our search and analytics data platform. You’ll manage capacity, cluster architecture, performance tuning, and incident response across bare-metal Kubernetes-backed clusters.

This role demands hands-on expertise with Elasticsearch and OpenSearch, ILM/ISM policies, and GitOps tooling. You’ll coordinate across teams during outages, plan migrations, and drive reliability at scale for hundreds of terabytes of data.

Qualifications

• 7+ years operating Elasticsearch at scale.
• Deep understanding of Elasticsearch internals: segment merging, translog, shard allocation.
• Production experience with Elasticsearch and OpenSearch in large deployments.
• Kubernetes-based deployments for stateful workloads.

Responsibilities

• Own lifecycle of search and analytics data platform.
• Plan capacity, cluster architecture, and performance tuning.
• Handle incident response and disaster recovery.
• Lead migration analysis between Elasticsearch and OpenSearch.
