Job summary

McGraw Hill is seeking a Senior Software Engineer with a strong data engineering background to design, build, and maintain scalable data systems powering learning platforms and analytics.

You will collaborate with data scientists, analysts, and product teams to ensure data availability, quality, and governance across the organization, while mentoring junior engineers and shaping the technology roadmap. This remote role supports the United States-based workforce.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of software engineering experience, with at least 3 years in data engineering.
• Experience designing and deploying event-driven / streaming data integration solutions at production scale.
• Hands-on expertise with Apache Kafka or comparable streaming platforms.
• Proficiency in Java, Python, or Golang.
• Strong working knowledge of JSON Schema and event schema design, including versioning and compatibility strategies.
• Demonstrated track record taking streaming solutions from design to production deployment, QA/testing, and monitoring.
• Experience with observability tooling — metrics, alerting, and logging for streaming pipelines (Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog).
• Familiarity with cloud-native data platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure).
• Strong communication and collaboration skills with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Knowledge of data governance, compliance, and security best practices.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop robust, scalable data pipelines to support educational platforms and analytics products.
• Architect and maintain data infrastructure including data lakes, warehouses, and streaming systems.
• Collaborate with product managers, data scientists, and instructional designers to translate educational goals into technical solutions.
• Lead and mentor junior engineers, conducting code reviews and promoting engineering best practices.
• Optimize database performance, query efficiency, and data quality across systems.
• Ensure data governance, security, and compliance with institutional data policies.
• Contribute to architectural decisions and technology roadmap planning.
• Monitor and troubleshoot production data systems, ensuring high availability and reliability.
