Job summary

UnitedHealth Group is seeking an SDS/Observations Medical Coder to join our national remote team. This full-time role focuses on outpatient Ambulatory Observation coding using CPT/ICD-10 with compliance to AHIMA/AAPC standards.

You will correct CCI/medically necessary edits, understand APCs, and collaborate with providers to obtain documentation. The role requires 2+ years of experience, Excel proficiency, and EMR access.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required with professional coder credentials.
• Current AHIMA or AAPC credentials (RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CCS-P, CPC or CPC-H).
• Minimum 2+ years outpatient facility coding experience with ICD-10.

Responsibilities

• Identify CPT and ICD-10 codes for outpatient Ambulatory Observation.
• Apply edits and Medical Necessity logic to ensure compliant coding.
• Understand APC codes for Medicare Ambulatory services.
• Abstract additional data during chart review when coding.
• Maintain coding ethics per AAPC/AHIMA standards.
• Meet quality and productivity targets per Optum360.
• Provide documentation feedback and query physicians when needed.
• Keep up-to-date coding knowledge from QM Manager and Directors.
• Attend coding department meetings and educational events.
• Review charts and address missing records; handle additional duties.
