Job summary

4MP is seeking a Principal Mechanical Systems Simulation Engineer to lead physics-based modeling of mechanical systems. You will own solvers, validate predictions against real data, and drive scalable simulation across materials and geometries.

This is a software-first role in a seed-stage startup, requiring deep expertise in structural mechanics, numerical methods, and production-grade code. You will work in a collaborative team to integrate simulations into the platform and guide the roadmap.

Qualifications

• Deep, hands-on background in structural mechanics, materials characterization, or physics-based simulation of real mechanical systems.
• Track record of owning a technical domain end-to-end and guiding others.
• Experience writing and shipping production code in a shared codebase (version control, testing, CI).
• Demonstrated ability to derive mechanics and validate against measurement rather than relying on black-box packages.
• Educational foundation in advanced mechanics or physics with relevant hands-on modeling.

Responsibilities

• Model structural response under load and predict deflection and positional error as a function of size, geometry, and material properties.
• Characterize material behavior and derive stiffness, damping, wear from test data for generalization.
• Parameterize and sweep simulations across size, material, speed, load, and engagement conditions.
• Build a robust simulation data pipeline with schemas, provenance, and reproducibility.
• Validate predictions against measurement data and iterate toward quantitative reliability.
• Write solvers and implement governing equations in production code (no reliance on external packages as primary deliverable).
• Develop production-grade software that is modular, tested, and maintainable.
• Optimize hot paths for performance via vectorization, parallelism, and GPU where suitable.
• Collaborate with platform, geometry, and sensing teams to integrate models into the codebase.
• Help define roadmap for sampling components, materials, and conditions for the simulation suite.
• Mentor teammates and document assumptions to enable reuse and extension.
