Job summary

The University of Iowa Health Care's Coding Denial Follow Up Team seeks an entry-level Coding Representative to review denials and assign ICD-10/CPT codes for outpatient and inpatient services. This role emphasizes accuracy, coding compliance, and customer service for patients and insurance contacts.

Remote work is eligible; training may be onsite or hybrid at HSSB. The position offers growth in healthcare revenue cycle, with opportunities to learn HIPAA guidelines and CMS rules while supporting

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Certification(s) such as RHIT, RHIA, CPC, CCS, CCSP preferred.
• 1-3 years’ experience in medical coding/billing preferred; will consider less.
• Knowledge of HIPAA laws and regulations.
• Strong attention to detail with data analysis and record keeping.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint).

Responsibilities

• Review medical records to assign CPT/HCPCS and ICD-10-CM/PCS codes consistent with guidelines.
• Monitor coding standards and policies to ensure full and accurate reimbursement.
• Resolve claims from an assigned work queue within timely guidelines.
• Determine if appropriate payments are made; interact with patients, payers, and CMS entities.
• Perform denial management and research to resolve overpayments and AR.
• Identify trends and potential process improvements.
• Provide status updates to leadership.
• Communicate changes in payor policies and denial trends; escalate delays.
