Job summary

University Medical Billing (UMB), a remote department of the University of Utah School of Medicine, seeks an experienced Medical Appeals & Coding Specialist. You will analyze diagnoses and procedures, translate them into codes, and support physicians, hospitals, and insurers. This is a senior-level role with minimal supervision.

Minimum 3+ years of related experience; AHIMA or AAPC certification preferred. Work hours align with M-F 8am-5pm Mountain Time, with primarily remote duties.

Qualifications

• 3+ years of related experience in medical coding and appeals.
• Ability to analyze medical records and translate diagnoses/procedures into codes.
• Experience working from home and meeting HIPAA requirements.

Responsibilities

• Detect abnormalities and provide recommendations for resolution.
• Provide training and education on billing procedures and workflows.
• Monitor and resolve denials and appeals to ensure timely collection.
• Collaborate with leadership to communicate denial trends and escalate as needed.
• Meet productivity and accuracy expectations and support department objectives.
