Job summary

Placements24 is seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer for a fully remote contract role. You will independently drive concept-to-drawings development for bespoke machinery, using Inventor or SolidWorks, with emphasis on manufacturability and cost-effectiveness.

You should have 5+ years in mechanical design, strong problem-solving, and excellent remote collaboration skills to work with clients and project managers globally. A reliable home office and internet are required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
• Minimum of 5 years' experience in mechanical design, especially custom or specialty machinery.
• Proficiency with 3D CAD software such as Inventor or SolidWorks.
• Solid understanding of manufacturing processes and material properties.
• Strong problem-solving and creative design approach.
• Ability to work autonomously and manage remote projects.
• Strong written and verbal communication for remote collaboration.
• Reliable internet and suitable home office setup.
• Eligibility to work as a contractor (South Africa) is essential.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop novel mechanical systems for specialized machinery using CAD.
• Create detailed 3D models, 2D drawings, and BOMs.
• Conduct engineering calculations and preliminary analyses for viability.
• Collaborate remotely with clients and project managers to capture requirements.
• Select materials and manufacturing processes for unique designs.
• Troubleshoot design challenges and propose effective remote solutions.
• Ensure designs are manufacturable, functional, and cost-efficient.
• Stay updated on new mechanical design and automation tech.
• Prepare technical documentation and client reports.
