Job summary

Allstate seeks a Managing Engineer to lead the Database & Platform Engineering team, handling on‑prem and cloud databases (MySQL, Redis, MongoDB, Atlas). You’ll manage a 4–10 person team to build, operate, and evolve platform services that enable product teams to ship features safely and quickly.

You will own the database architecture, partner with product, SRE, security, and cloud teams to ensure operational excellence, and drive automation, CI/CD, and cost optimization across the data stack.

Qualifications

• 7+ years total experience in database administration or data platform engineering.
• 3+ years in a people management or technical leadership capacity.
• Experience deploying production environments on both on-premises and cloud.
• Strong understanding of database internals, replication, sharding, and backup/restore.
• Experience with automation and orchestration tools.
• Familiar with CI/CD concepts and tooling for schema migrations and platform changes.
• Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead a team of Database Administrators / Platform Engineers, including hiring, performance reviews, and career development.
• Own the technical roadmap for database platform services (MySQL, Redis, MongoDB on prem, and MongoDB Atlas).
• Oversee installation, configuration, upgrades, automation, backups, capacity planning, and runbooks for production systems.
• Design database architecture and operational patterns (sharding, high availability, DR, backups, failover).
• Build CI/CD pipelines and automation for provisioning, schema changes, migrations, and config management.
• Partner with product engineering, SRE, security, and cloud teams to define SLAs/SLOs and incident response.
• Establish monitoring, alerting, and observability for database health and performance.
• Define standards, best practices, and governance for access, security, backups, and compliance.
• Lead post-incident reviews and drive continuous improvement to reduce MTTD/MTTR.
