Qualifications

• One year of creditable experience in medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, medical coding.
• Associate degree with at least 12 semester hours in health information technology/health information management.
• Completion of an AHIMA approved coding program or equivalent training leading to coding certification eligibility.
• Equivalent combinations of education and experience qualify for MRT (Coder).
• Mastery or professional certification through AHIMA/AAPC may qualify under grandfathering provisions.

Responsibilities

• Assign codes from ICD, CPT, HCPCS for inpatient and professional services.
• Review health records to ensure documentation supports assigned codes.
• Consult with clinical staff for clarification of conflicting or incomplete data.
• Enter and correct information in encoder software to ensure accurate DRG and billing.
• Ensure coding aligns with VERA program guidelines and regulatory changes.
