Job summary

Nelnet seeks a Data Engineer to own the data foundation for GenAI solutions in higher education and state/local government clients. You will build and maintain data pipelines on Google Cloud, ensuring data is structured, classified, and access-controlled for AI use.

Work within the GenAI delivery team translating requirements into production pipelines, assess FERPA risks, and partner with GCP/Gemini and Engineer teams to deliver reliable, compliant data for agentic AI use cases.

Qualifications

• Hands-on data pipeline experience on major cloud platforms.
• Strong SQL and Python for pipeline development and data transformation.
• Experience with data governance and classification tooling for identifying and managing sensitive or regulated data.
• Knowledge of FERPA and education data compliance.
• Experience collaborating with client teams and engineers.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain data pipelines on Google Cloud.
• Implement ELT/ETL for batch data ingestion.
• Classify data with Dataplex and DLP for AI readiness.
• Define data models and collaborate with client teams.
• Ensure governance, security, and data quality in delivery.
