Job summary

Nelnet is seeking a Data Engineer to own the data foundation for GenAI solutions in higher education and public sector contexts. The role focuses on building data pipelines on Google Cloud, ensuring data is structured, classified, and access-controlled for AI use.

You will work within the GenAI delivery team to surface FERPA-related compliance risks before production. Remote, full-time role with compensation ranging from $115,000 to $135,000 based on experience.

Qualifications

• Hands-on data pipeline experience for analytics or GenAI on major cloud platforms.
• Strong governance and classification tooling for sensitive data (FERPA knowledge a plus).
• Experience with Google Cloud tools and data privacy considerations.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain data pipelines on Google Cloud for GenAI use cases.
• Classify and tag client data to ensure appropriate access controls and governance.
• Collaborate with GCP/Gemini teams to provide data readiness for AI solutions.
