Job summary

Coinbase is seeking a Senior Staff Software Engineer on the Platform Payments team. You will define the engineering vision for fiat movement across 50+ countries and build rails, routing, and funds-flow services that power every customer payment experience.

You will own the multi-quarter strategy, improve reliability and latency, and mentor engineers while collaborating with FinHub, Payments Risk, Regulatory Platform, and Product to balance customer experience with risk and unit economics.

Qualifications

• 10+ years building and operating large-scale distributed systems in production.
• Deep money-movement architecture experience including PSPs, ISO 20022, routing, double-entry ledgering, and high-volume payment systems.
• Proven track record designing highly available, high-performance systems with scaling foresight.
• Experience leading cross-functional technical initiatives and mentoring senior engineers.
• Strong ability to communicate complex technical tradeoffs to executives and cross-org stakeholders.
• Utilizes generative AI responsibly with human oversight to improve workflow efficiency, cost, and quality.

Responsibilities

• Define and drive the multi-quarter technical strategy for Payments spanning rails, orchestration, and transfers to support new products, geos, and growth in payment volume.
• Architect and evolve the core Payments platform for high availability, low latency, and cost efficiency at global scale.
• Lead end-to-end design and rollout of large, cross-team initiatives, breaking ambiguity into milestones and measurable outcomes.
• Set and enforce technical standards for financial correctness across Payments, including idempotency, reconciliation, and auditability.
• Partner with FinHub, Payments Risk, Regulatory Platform, and Product to design cohesive architectures balancing experience, risk controls, and unit economics.
• Provide deep technical mentorship to senior and staff engineers across Payments pods, elevating design quality and maintainability.
