Job summary

SMX is seeking a Cyber Security Engineer to provide security engineering, compliance, and risk management for cloud systems aligned with NIST SP 800-53, FedRAMP, and DoD IL4–6. The role supports authorization, audit readiness, continuous monitoring, and automation across AWS, Azure, and hybrid environments.

The position is remote supporting a Herndon, VA based team. 5+ years in federal cloud security and RMF are preferred; U.S. citizenship with ability to obtain a Secret clearance is required.

Qualifications

• U.S. citizenship with ability to obtain and maintain a Secret or higher clearance.
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience in a related field.
• 5+ years in cybersecurity with federal cloud security engineering/RMF/ISSO functions.

Responsibilities

• Provide security engineering and compliance support for FedRAMP/DoD cloud environments.
• Advise on authorization strategies, control implementation, and audit readiness.
• Develop and maintain SSPs, POA&Ms, SARs, policies and artifacts.
• Support authorization planning, gap assessments, and remediation activities.
• Automate compliance workflows using scripts and APIs to improve evidence collection.
• Collaborate with Cloud/DevOps teams to validate security controls.
