Job summary

SMX is seeking a Cyber Security Engineer to provide security engineering, compliance, and RMF support for cloud-based systems aligned with NIST SP 800-53, FedRAMP, and DoD IL4–6 requirements. The role is remote, supporting a Herndon, VA based team, with a focus on evidence collection, control validation, and remediation tracking across AWS, Azure, and hybrid environments.

You will advise partners and customers on federal requirements, develop authorization artifacts, and automate compliance

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Information Security, Cybersecurity, Computer Science, or related field or equivalent practical experience.
• Five+ years of cybersecurity experience, including federal cloud security engineering or RMF.
• Experience with NIST SP 800-53 Rev. 5, FedRAMP Moderate/High, and DoD IL4–6 overlays.
• Experience developing and maintaining SSPs, POA&Ms, SARs, and other artifacts.
• Ability to translate federal requirements into practical technical controls and processes.

Responsibilities

• Provide security engineering and compliance support for FedRAMP and DoD authorized cloud environments.
• Advise partners and customers on security requirements and audit readiness.
• Develop and maintain authorization documentation and evidence artifacts.
• Support authorization planning, gap assessments, and remediation activities.
• Automate compliance workflows using scripts, APIs, and cloud-native services.
• Collaborate with Cloud/DevOps teams to implement security controls across AWS/Azure/hybrid environments.
• Coordinate with stakeholders to address findings and support authorization outcomes.
• Support continuous monitoring and remediation tracking.
