Job summary

Deckers Brands seeks a Sr. Manager of AI Engineering to lead enterprise AI platforms, govern model access, and drive production AI initiatives. You will shape the AI way of working, implement guardrails, and collaborate with security, data, and business teams.

The role requires 8–12 years in software/data/ML engineering, 3–5+ years in leadership, and hands-on experience with foundation models and orchestration. This remote-friendly US role emphasizes responsible AI and scalable solutions.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering or related field.
• 8–12 years of software, data, or ML engineering experience building production systems.
• 3–5+ years leading engineering teams in cloud-native environments.
• 3+ years delivering production AI or ML systems, including 2+ years building generative AI apps.
• Hands-on with retrieval augmented generation, agent frameworks, tool use, orchestration patterns.
• Experience with foundation model platforms such as AWS Bedrock, Azure OpenAI, or equivalent.
• Strong understanding of LLM app architecture: retrieval, context management, tool use, agent design.
• Leadership, problem-solving, and cross-functional collaboration skills.

Responsibilities

• Own the enterprise AI platform, including governed access to foundation models and cost controls.
• Define reusable AI engineering patterns for retrieval augmented generation and orchestration.
• Lead evaluation framework: offline/online metrics, regression testing, release criteria.
• Deliver AI apps into production across internal and customer-facing use cases.
• Ensure production readiness with guardrails, safety controls, and incident response.
• Monitor AI tooling landscape and migrate as models/providers change.
• Own AI engineering roadmap and staffing aligned to business priorities.
• Mentor AI engineers and coordinate with external partners.
• Establish governance practices and audit trails for AI systems.
