Job summary

GitLab is seeking an Engineering Manager for the Git team. You will guide senior and staff engineers, shaping a culture of ownership while delivering on upstream Git and related infrastructure initiatives.

You will work in a fully distributed team, coordinating across time zones, with emphasis on performance, scalability, and long-term maintainability of the Git codebase and ecosystem.

Qualifications

• Experience leading engineering teams with direct reports, including hiring, performance management, and career development.
• Ability to guide highly specialized engineers through ambiguity and long-horizon technical tradeoffs.
• Strong written communication and asynchronous collaboration across distributed, multi-timezone teams.

Responsibilities

• Manage a team of senior and staff engineers working on the Git version control system and related infrastructure.
• Build a culture of technical rigor, accountability, and ownership.
• Drive execution on performance, scalability, maintainability, and core Git architecture.
• Help balance upstream open source development with GitLab product and infrastructure priorities.
• Support engineers’ growth through mentoring, feedback, and stretch opportunities.
• Foster strong written communication and asynchronous alignment across a distributed team.
• Partner with downstream teams relying on Git expertise for performance, design, and roadmap clarity.
