Job summary

University of Michigan is hiring a full-time Software Engineer to build AI-enabled tools and platforms that help researchers develop, test, and evaluate AI in healthcare. You will work with researchers and our technical team to create backend services, APIs, and integrations with clinical systems, deploying in OpenShift/Kubernetes environments and ensuring scalable, secure solutions.

This hybrid role offers onsite opportunities in Ann Arbor with remote possibilities for exceptional candidates;

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in CS/Software Eng or equivalent.
• 5–7 years designing, building, maintaining software applications and APIs.
• Proficiency in Python and troubleshooting maintainable software.
• Experience integrating APIs and SQL-relational databases.
• Familiarity with LLM APIs and AI tool integration.
• Experience deploying apps with containers and deployment workflows.
• Owns solving technical problems and driving solutions.
• Strong communication across technical and non-technical teams.
• Proficient with version control, testing, and documentation.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain AI-enabled research tools and platforms.
• Collaborate with researchers to define requirements and deliver solutions.
• Develop backend services, APIs, automation, and components.
• Integrate LLM APIs and AI services with institutional systems.
• Build, deploy, and troubleshoot containerized apps in OpenShift/Kubernetes.
• Develop reusable software components and cross-project integrations.
• Apply best practices: version control, testing, docs, monitoring.
• Integrate apps with Epic MiChart, U-M GPT, REDCap, data platforms.
• Design databases and data-access patterns for AI-enabled workflows.
• Investigate unfamiliar systems and propose reliable, secure solutions.
