Job Summary

We are hiring a full-time Software Engineer to build the tools, applications, and platforms that help University of Michigan researchers develop, test, and evaluate AI in healthcare.

You’ll work directly with researchers and our technical team to turn ideas into working solutions, building AI-powered applications, backend services, APIs, and integrations with clinical and university systems. Your work will include connecting large language models with institutional resources, deploying applications in secure OpenShift/Kubernetes environments, and developing reusable capabilities that help research teams move faster.

We’re looking for an engineer who enjoys solving unfamiliar problems, takes ownership from initial concept through deployment, and works iteratively with users to improve what they build. Healthcare data integration is one component of a broader role spanning software development, systems integration, automation, and AI tool deployment. This position focuses on engineering the systems that enable AI research rather than developing new machine learning algorithms.

This position is hybrid, based primarily from home with onsite opportunities in Ann Arbor, Michigan. A fully remote arrangement will be considered for exceptional candidates.

Responsibilities
  • Design, build, and maintain AI-enabled research tools, applications, and shared platforms, taking solutions from initial concept through testing, deployment, and ongoing improvement.
  • Collaborate with researchers, clinicians, and technical colleagues to understand needs, define requirements, and deliver practical solutions through rapid prototyping and iterative development.
  • Develop backend services, APIs, automation, and application components that connect AI tools with research workflows and institutional systems.
  • Integrate large language model APIs and institutionally approved AI services into applications, including access to relevant data and evaluation of system behavior.
  • Build, deploy, and troubleshoot containerized applications and services in OpenShift/Kubernetes environments, partnering with infrastructure and security teams.
  • Develop reusable software components and integrations that reduce duplicated effort across research projects.
  • Apply sound software engineering practices, including version control, code review, automated testing, documentation, monitoring, and maintainable system design.
  • Integrate applications with Epic MiChart, U-M GPT, REDCap, research data platforms, and other services in partnership with institutional subject-matter experts.
  • Design database structures and data-access patterns, and develop data pipelines and interfaces as needed to support applications and AI-enabled workflows.
  • Investigate unfamiliar systems and technical problems, validate assumptions with appropriate experts, and recommend solutions that balance usability, reliability, security, and scalability.
Required Qualifications Senior
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Five to seven years of experience designing, building, and maintaining software applications, backend services, APIs, or technical platforms.
  • Proficiency in Python or a comparable programming language, with the ability to develop and troubleshoot maintainable software.
  • Experience integrating APIs and services, and working with relational databases and SQL.
  • Familiarity with large language model APIs and integrating AI capabilities into software tools or applications.
  • Experience deploying and supporting applications, including familiarity with containers and deployment workflows.
  • Ability to independently investigate technical problems, evaluate design options, and take ownership of solutions.
  • Experience using version control, testing, documentation, and collaborative development practices.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to translate user needs into technical solutions while working across technical and non-technical teams.
Required Qualifications Intermediate
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Three to five years of experience developing software applications, backend services, APIs, or related systems.

  • Experience working with APIs, relational databases, and SQL.
  • Familiarity with large language model APIs and their use in software applications.
  • Familiarity with version control, testing, documentation, and application deployment practices.
  • Ability to investigate unfamiliar technical problems, validate findings, and seek guidance from appropriate subject-matter experts.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate with technical colleagues and research users.
Desired Qualifications Senior
  • Experience building and deploying AI-powered applications, research software, or platforms used by multiple teams.
  • Hands-on experience with Kubernetes or OpenShift, application monitoring, and deployment automation.
  • Current Epic Clarity certification or Epic-issued Clarity Proficiency credential.
  • Experience with healthcare or research systems such as Epic MiChart, U-M GPT, REDCap, Caboodle, Chronicles, or research data warehouses.
  • Experience with healthcare integrations, including FHIR, HL7, interface engines, messaging systems, or real-time data services.
  • Understanding of EHR data, clinical workflows, database design, query optimization, or data-quality validation.
  • Experience working with HIPAA-regulated data and institutional privacy, security, or research governance processes.
