Job summary

Applied Engineering is seeking an Electrical Design Engineer to lead electrical design and validation across major subsystems. The role emphasizes translating system requirements into robust electrical designs, owning schematics, BOMs, and driving testing and troubleshooting.

The engineer will collaborate with mechanical, systems, manufacturing, sourcing, quality, and project teams while mentoring junior engineers and staying updated on power system advancements.

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering required.
• 5+ years of industrial experience in electrical design or electromechanical systems.
• Strong knowledge of power distribution, conversion, monitoring, controls, and system integration.
• Experience designing switchgear, switchboards, transfer switches, loadbanks, and generators.
• Experience selecting and validating electrical components using NEC, UL, and industry derating criteria.
• Proven design documentation, reviews, testing, validation, and troubleshooting experience.
• Working knowledge of design standards, manufacturability, safety, and compliance.
• Familiarity with electrical power standards and regulations.
• Ability to specify safe prototype testing practices.
• Detail-oriented, proactive, and able to work in fast-paced environments.
• Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.
• Experience with AutoCAD Electrical, SolidWorks Electrical, ETAP, SKM, or similar tools.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365.
• Ability to travel up to 20% within the USA.
• Experience in research or new product development environments.
• NFPA 70E Certification.
• Knowledge of UL standards including UL1008, UL508A, UL1691, UL489, UL924, UL1741, UL9540, and others.
• Understanding of NFPA codes preferred.
• Experience with ERP, PLM, and engineering data management systems.

Responsibilities

• Lead electrical design and validation for major subsystems and product areas.
• Translate system requirements into practical, robust electrical designs.
• Own schematics, drawings, calculations, specifications, and bills of material.
• Drive design reviews, trade studies, prototype builds, testing, and troubleshooting.
• Collaborate with mechanical, systems, manufacturing, sourcing, quality, and project teams.
• Mentor early‑career engineers and reinforce electrical design standards.
• Support project planning, effort estimation, and execution.
• Stay current with advancements in power systems, microgrids, renewable energy, and power conversion technologies.
• Work collaboratively with suppliers and Applied partners.
• Contribute to projects that impact communities across North America.
• Apply your skills in a dynamic environment that values ownership and innovation.
