Job summary

Nationwide Financial is seeking a Director, Underwriting - Life to lead the Life Underwriting team within the Life New Business organization. The role focuses on mortality risk assessment, morbidity risk management, and protecting Nationwide against expenses, with a portfolio including universal life and long-term care products.

The candidate will coach underwriters, manage relationships with sales partners, and ensure high-quality underwriting decisions while navigating regulatory requirements.

Qualifications

• Deep life underwriting expertise and ability to make sound decisions in complex situations.
• Experience handling large-case life underwriting; $10M+ cases preferred.
• Relationship-driven environment experience with BGA/brokerage or similar.
• Leadership experience coaching underwriting professionals and building career paths.
• Knowledge of underwriting guidelines with practical, compliant decision-making.

Responsibilities

• Leads and oversees team roles, ensuring engagement, quality, and compliance.
• Sponsoring or leading major projects to improve relationship management and operations.
• Hires and develops underwriters; builds talent for succession planning.
• Manages service relationships with Sales and partners; drives satisfaction and growth.
• Ensures regulatory compliance and effective implementation of products and procedures.
