Job summary

Syms Strategic Group (SSG) seeks a Data Platform Engineer for a 100% remote role supported by the Veterans Affairs department. The role focuses on modernizing a healthcare data platform with strong AWS data services and enterprise migration experience.

You will architect scalable storage, build a SQL-friendly reporting layer, and collaborate with a C#/.NET team. U.S. citizenship and Public Trust clearance are required for this position.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of software or data engineering with AWS focus.
• Experience migrating cloud data platforms in production.
• Ability to select AWS data services to meet reporting needs.
• Experience delivering analytics for non-technical users.
• Deep hands-on AWS data services experience (S3, Athena, Glue, Aurora, DynamoDB, Redshift, OpenSearch, Lambda, IAM, CloudWatch).
• Strong SQL skills for relational layers over XML/JSON.
• Experience with XML-heavy data stores and data transformation at scale.
• Ability to evaluate trade-offs and advise on cost/performance.

Responsibilities

• Lead healthcare data platform modernization efforts.
• Architect cloud-native AWS data architecture and reporting layer.
• Design migration path for XML object store to AWS platform.
• Build and maintain AWS data catalog, schemas, and metadata.
• Optimize query performance and cost across AWS services.
• Collaborate with business stakeholders to translate requirements into data models.
• Work with .NET backend engineers to ensure data flow from EDI pipelines.
• Implement CI/CD with AWS tooling and IaC practices.
