Job summary

Syms Strategic Group, LLC seeks a Data Platform Engineer to advance a healthcare data platform modernization initiative. You will migrate from MSSQL XML object stores to a cloud-native AWS architecture, enabling analysts to run SQL-based reports against healthcare data with optimized performance and cost.

You will evaluate AWS data strategies, design data models, and collaborate with stakeholders and a C#/.Net integration team to ensure smooth data flows from EDI processing into the new layer.

Qualifications

• 8+ years’ experience in software or data engineering with a strong AWS focus.
• Proven experience architecting and executing cloud data platform migrations in production enterprise or healthcare environments.
• Track record of evaluating and selecting AWS data services to meet business reporting and query requirements.
• Experience delivering reporting or analytics solutions for non-technical users.
• Strong SQL skills for relational queries over XML/JSON data.
• Experience with XML-heavy data stores and XML processing at scale.
• Familiarity with AWS analytics and BI tools (Athena/QuickSight/Redshift).
• Proficiency with Git/GitHub and CI/CD (CodePipeline/CodeBuild/CodeDeploy).
• IaC experience with AWS CDK/CloudFormation/Terraform.
• Ability to communicate architecture decisions to non-technical stakeholders.
• Experience translating business reporting needs into data models.
• Comfort driving ambiguous architectural decisions to resolution.

Responsibilities

• Lead the next phase of healthcare data platform modernization.
• Evolve MSSQL XML object store to cloud-native AWS data architecture for SQL-based reporting.
• Evaluate AWS data strategies and storage options (S3+Athena, Aurora, DynamoDB, Redshift, OpenSearch).
• Design and build reporting/query layer for business users to run SQL against healthcare data.
• Architect migration path from MSSQL XML object store to AWS platform, including storage formats and partitioning.
• Build and maintain AWS data catalog, schemas, and metadata for discoverability.
• Optimize query performance and cost across AWS services via partitioning, formats, and tuning.
• Collaborate with stakeholders to translate reporting requirements into data models and queries.
• Coordinate data flow from EDI pipelines to the new data layer with back-end engineers.
• Implement CI/CD for data infrastructure using AWS tooling and IaC practices.
• Document architecture decisions, data flows, and dictionaries clearly.
