Job summary

Avalara is seeking a Commissions Accountant Lead to own detailed accounting for sales and partner commissions under ASC 606. This role blends hands-on accounting with automating processes and applying AI tools to improve accuracy and controls.

The position emphasizes collaboration across Legal, Financial Operations, Revenue Operations, and IT to implement system improvements and ensure SOX compliance. Remote in the United States.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of progressive accounting experience with commission/accounting focus
• Experience with ASC 606 costs and GAAP classification
• SaaS or subscription business experience with complex contracts
• Hands-on automation design to improve accuracy and cycle time
• AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot) in accounting analysis or automation
• ERP familiarity and advanced Excel skills

Responsibilities

• Perform detailed accounting for commission accruals, expense, capitalization, and amortization under ASC 606
• Review complex sales/partner agreements for proper accounting treatment
• Design automated workflows and AI-enabled tools for review, reconciliation, and data quality
• Prepare reconciliations for commission-related balance sheet and P&L
• Support SOX-compliant controls over commission accounting
• Prepare journals, schedules, and memos for audits and reporting
• Collaborate with Legal, Finance Ops, Revenue Ops, Partner Ops, Global Analytics, IT on deal structures
• Advise on commission plans and serve as a technical resource on accounting questions
