Job summary

UnitedHealthcare is seeking a Coder III to join the Health Information Management Team. This role codes diagnoses and procedures (ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT-4) for diverse hospital settings, reviews documentation, and ensures data integrity for outcomes and reimbursement.

Telecommuting from anywhere in the U.S. is possible. Expect to work with AHIMA/APPC credentials, maintain coding standards, and collaborate with physicians and care teams to support accurate, timely billing and compliance.

Qualifications

• Complete AHIMA or APPC accredited coding certification program including anatomy/physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, medical terminology and ICD-10/CPT coding.
• Maintain current coding credentials from AHIMA or AAPC (RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CCS-P, CPC, or CPC-H).
• 2+ years Same Day Surgery, Wound Care, IVR, CVIR (specialty), Observation coding experience.
• 2+ years of ICD-10 coding experience.
• Pass pre-employment requirements including drug screen and background check.

Responsibilities

• Assign codes for diagnoses, treatments, and procedures per classification system for various admissions.
• Code ancillary and/or emergency department charts when needed.
• Review provider documentation to determine reason for visit and procedures.
• Provide documentation feedback and query physicians when appropriate.
• Use ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS and CPT-4 codes for procedures.
• Ensure accurate coding through query processes if needed.
• Extract information from source docs into encoder/abstracting systems.
• Verify patient disposition at discharge and meet KPI timelines.
• Support Revenue Cycle and perform charge validation and related duties.
