Job summary

Defense Unicorns is seeking a Mid to Senior Software Engineer to move legacy software to a cloud‑native platform and own end‑to‑end project delivery for a US Navy team. You will design scalable data pipelines, implement security, and drive modernization across on‑prem to cloud transitions.

You will collaborate with engineers, analysts, and external stakeholders, participate in architectural discussions, and advocate best practices in API design, data governance, and RBAC/ABAC.

Qualifications

• 3+ years (mid) or 5+ years (senior) software engineering experience.
• Expert in at least one modern language (Go, TypeScript, Python).
• Strong system design, API development, and workflow orchestration knowledge (Argo Workflows preferred).
• Relational databases, cloud platforms (AWS, Azure).
• Deep knowledge of database design, indexing, and query optimization.
• Lead decomposition of monoliths into microservices with lightweight APIs.
• Modern API design with RESTful services; experience with FastAPI, ASP.NET or equivalents.
• Authorization, data governance, security telemetry pipelines, and RBAC/ABAC for enterprise systems.
• Kubernetes concepts: Controllers, Operators, CRDs; clean architecture and automation.

Responsibilities

• Translate product requirements into technical solutions with stakeholders.
• Design, build, and maintain ETL/ELT workflows and data pipelines.
• Implement authentication, authorization, and security best practices.
• Create optimized data transformations and metadata lineage across cloud-native tools.
• Refactor on-prem systems to distributed, cloud-based services.
• Contribute to architecture decisions and code reviews; drive CI/CD improvements.
• Mentor engineers and elevate engineering standards; engage in architectural discussions.
• Collaborate with partner engineers and mission heroes to deliver solutions.
• Communicate technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
