Job summary

Washington University in St. Louis is seeking a Medical Coding Specialist to review medical records and assign CPT and ICD codes. The role involves collaboration with physicians to ensure complete documentation and proper signatures, plus supporting staff with terminology and policy interpretation.

The position includes responsibilities to improve physician understanding of coding requirements and to prepare case reports and pursue billing follow-up as needed.

Qualifications

• Must have AHIMA (CCA, CCS, CCS-P) or AAPC (CPC, CPC-A, CPC-H, CPC-H-A) credentials as listed.
• Knowledge of ICD-10 and CPT coding.
• Preferred: previous coding experience or associate's degree in Medical Coding & Billing.

Responsibilities

• Review documentation to identify facts needed to select diagnoses and procedures.
• Code evaluation and management to appropriate CPT code and ICD-9 (or ICD-10) codes.
• Meet with physicians to review documentation and obtain signatures for dates of service.
• Assist coders and staff with medical terminology and policy interpretation.
• Help increase physician awareness of documentation requirements.
• Prepare case reports and initiate follow-up for billing process.
