Job summary

Upstart is seeking an Applied Scientist Intern to become a specialist in models, products, and codebase. You’ll identify problems, conduct offline analyses, and present solutions with mentorship from experienced ML practitioners.

You’ll work remotely with a team across the US, contributing to predictive modeling, experimentation, and production-ready improvements that impact real customer outcomes.

Qualifications

• Bachelor, Master, or PhD in mathematics, statistics, physics, econometrics, CS or related quantitative field; on track to graduate by 2028.
• Strong fundamentals in statistics, probability, and ML theory.
• Ability to analyze data and evaluate ML models using Python; basic SQL.
• Curiosity, humility, drive and teamwork; strong communication.
• Experience with agentic tooling (Claude Code, Codex).

Responsibilities

• Research ML approaches to improve model performance and business value.
• Design, implement, and evaluate model or product enhancements with rigorous experiments.
• Translate research into clear recommendations and production-ready solutions.
• Collaborate with mentor and ML team to align stakeholders and plan next steps.
