Job summary

Upstart is seeking an Applied Scientist to improve models and develop approaches across marketing channels. You will work on causal machine learning, experiment design, and production-ready modeling, collaborating with Growth and Marketing teams. This role emphasizes data-rich problem solving and scalable data pipelines.

The team focuses on direct mail, lifecycle, email, and other channels, with a digital-first culture and flexible remote work across the US and Canada.

Qualifications

• Master’s Degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, Operations Research or a related field.
• Experience applying statistical and machine learning methods to modeling or data science problems.
• Experience using Python for data analysis, data preparation, and machine learning model development.
• Experience with causal inference and experimental design, including statistically rigorous evaluation of model or experiment performance.

Responsibilities

• Analyze historical model and campaign performance to identify opportunities to improve model effectiveness and marketing outcomes.
• Develop and evaluate machine learning models and features to improve prospect selection and marketing use cases.
• Design rigorous experiments to measure causal impact and optimize campaigns.
• Build reusable data pipelines, metrics, and analytical approaches for scalable model development.
• Collaborate with ML, Growth, and Marketing Platform Engineering teams to translate business problems into research agendas.
