Job summary

Upstart is hiring an Applied Scientist Intern. You will research ML and statistical methods to boost predictive performance and business value, design and test enhancements, and translate findings into actionable recommendations. You will work with a mentor and align stakeholders to drive next steps.

The role is fully remote within the United States, with occasional on-site collaborations. A strong foundation in Python, SQL, and ML theory, plus excellent communication, is required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor/Master/PhD in mathematics, statistics, physics, econometrics, CS or related quantitative field; on track to graduate by 2028
• Strong fundamentals in statistics, probability, and ML theory
• Ability to analyze data and evaluate ML or statistical models using Python and SQL basics
• Curiosity, humility, drive and teamwork; strong communication
• Familiarity with modern agentic tooling (Claude Code, Codex)

Responsibilities

• Research ML and statistical approaches to improve model performance and business value
• Design, implement, and evaluate model or product enhancements using rigorous experimentation
• Translate research findings into clear recommendations and production-ready solutions
• Collaborate with mentor and align stakeholders to drive next steps
