Job summary

Upstart is seeking an Applied Scientist Intern to advance ML models and product capabilities. You will conduct self-guided analyses, prototype improvements, and present findings to the ML team, with mentorship from senior practitioners.

You’ll work remotely across the US, collaborating with engineers and product teams to impact predictive performance and business value while learning modern AI tooling and techniques.

Qualifications

• Bachelor/Master/PhD in a quantitative field or on track by 2028.
• Strong foundations in statistics, probability and ML theory.
• Ability to analyze data and evaluate ML models using Python and basic SQL.
• Curiosity, teamwork and strong communication skills.
• Experience with agentic tooling (Claude Code, Codex).

Responsibilities

• Research ML and statistical approaches to improve model performance and business value.
• Design, implement, and evaluate model or product enhancements with rigorous experiments.
• Translate findings into clear recommendations and production-ready solutions.
• Collaborate with mentor and align stakeholders on next steps.
