Job summary

Upstart is seeking an Applied Scientist Intern to become a specialist in our models, products, and codebase. You will identify problems, communicate opportunities, and propose solutions through self-directed analyses and presentations to the ML team.

You will be mentored by experienced practitioners and work with the team to improve products and models, translating research into practical, production-ready approaches.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's, Master's or PhD in a quantitative field; on track to graduate by 2028.
• Strong foundations in statistics and ML theory.
• Experience with Python and basic SQL.
• Excellent communication and teamwork.

Responsibilities

• Research ML approaches to improve predictive performance and business value.
• Design and evaluate model or product enhancements with rigorous experiments.
• Translate findings into clear recommendations and production-ready solutions.
• Collaborate with mentor and ML team to align stakeholders and plan next steps.
