Job summary

Kansas Department of Health and Environment is seeking a qualified inspector to conduct comprehensive inspections of regulated facilities with above-ground and underground storage tanks. The role includes site assessments, sampling, and overseeing closures, ensuring QA/QC adherence and regulatory compliance.

Responsibilities include responding to spills, coordinating with project managers, and providing guidance to industry representatives.

Qualifications

• High School or GED required.
• Two years of experience in an environmental field and/or program; education may substitute for experience.
• Preferred: Environmental/Natural Sciences/Geology, strong computer skills (Word/Excel/PowerPoint/Access).

Position Summary & Responsibilities

Conduct comprehensive inspections of regulated facilities utilizing above ground storage tanks (ASTs) and/or underground storage tanks (USTs). Completes subsurface site assessments, audits inventory/operational records, oversees tank closures and removals, and as appropriate collects soil and/or groundwater samples for field and/or laboratory analysis to determine contaminated cleanup status. Responsible for resolving all noncompliance issues in a timely manner. Assured work is accurate and consistent, following QA/QC and agency procedures.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

• Assist in the review and evaluation of geological and hydrogeologic technical work plans, proposals and reports for remediation projects.
• Assists project managers by monitoring equipment and techniques used by consultants to ensure work is being conducted in conformance with approved work plans.
• Respond to spills, releases, and discharges of regulated substances that may threaten or harm public health and/or the environment.
• Responses may be considered "emergency" in nature and may occur outside of normal business hours.
• Serve as the lead worker on spill and emergency responses.
• Provide consultation and instruction to industry representatives and clean-up contractors concerning containment of spilled substance and remediation of impacted material.
• Often reviews the spill database to determine if past spills require further action prior to being assigned a "closed" status.

Qualifications

• Education:
  • High School, GED
• Licensing & Certification:
  • Valid Driver's License - Incumbent is required to have and maintain a valid driver's license when operating a state vehicle, a private vehicle, or a rental vehicle for the benefit of the State
• Minimum Qualifications:
  • Two years of experience in an environmental field and/or program. Education may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency
