Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) is led by Secretary Janet Stanek and comprises three divisions: Public Health, Environment, and Health Care Finance (including the State’s Medicaid program, KanCare). KDHE is the only agency that consolidates these entities under one roof, enabling a holistic approach to improving and protecting the health and well‑being of all Kansans.

Position Summary & Responsibilities

The position (K0232617) processes walk‑in requests submitted through kiosks, verifies information and eligibility for certificates, and makes use of judgment and authority to approve or deny requests. The role requires advising applicants, explaining situations, and referring issues to the correct staff. It manages fee collection, customer service, and ensures compliance with the Uniform Vital Statistics Act and state policies.

Key Responsibilities
  • Key regular mail into the Point of Sale (POS) system while working the front counter.
  • Process requests requiring specific coding and processing into the POS system, including Amendments and Corrections.
  • Handle daily funeral home requests and courier requests immediately upon receipt.
  • Match copies of records or response sheets with the correct application and receipt.
  • Review printed certificates to ensure the issuable record is appropriate and can be legally issued.
  • Trim certificates according to guidelines.
  • Review requests for fraudulent information or identity theft indicators.
  • Validate payments, including system‑generated checks for credit/debit card payments.
  • Report errors to supervisor and follow proper procedures to correct them before business close.
Qualifications

Licensing & Certification
  • Valid driver’s license (required for operating a state vehicle, private vehicle, or rental vehicle).
Minimum Qualifications
  • Two years of experience in general office, clerical, and administrative support work.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access.
  • Proofreading, editing, and attention to detail.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to use a 10‑key adding machine.
  • Data entry skills; typing 40‑50 words per minute.
  • Bookkeeping or accounting experience.
  • Six months experience as a cashier or bookkeeper.
  • Six months experience handling confidential information.
  • One year experience in customer service.
  • One year experience in office support or clerical work.
Post‑Offer, Pre‑Employment Requirements
  • Kansas Tax Clearance Certificate within ten (10) days of job offer.
  • Fingerprinting and criminal history check per K.S.A. 65‑2402(b) for Office of Vital Statistics positions.
