Job summary

Starr Regional Medical Center is seeking a Registered Nurse (RN) for the Med Surg Float Pool in Athens, TN. This per diem, as-needed role involves direct patient care across a broad age range and requires bedside assessment and care coordination.

The Med Surg team emphasizes collaboration, mentorship, and professional growth in a fast-paced environment. BLS is required; PALS within 6 months. A Tennessee RN license is expected, with BSN preferred.

Qualifications

  • Education: Associate's degree required. BSN preferred.
  • Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Licenses: Active TennesseeRN license (single-state or compact) required. If relocating, licensure must be updated to the new Primary State of Residence (PSOR) before employment begins.
  • Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification is required at the time of hire, Pediatric Advanced Life Support required within 6 months of hire or department transfer.

  • Establishes a plan of care aligned with identified problems and patient preferences.
  • Supervises and mentors nursing and support staff during assigned shift.
  • Assists in determining staffing levels and assignments based on staff availability and census.
  • Provides direct patient care as needed.
  • Floats between staff to assist with problem-solving.
  • Takes patient assignments to meet staffing needs.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of patient care and addresses issues affecting outcomes.
  • Responds to complaints and manages through established channels.
  • Performs role-specific duties including admissions, discharges, and transfers.

Job Type: Per Diem, As needed: 12 hour variable shifts

Provides direct patient care in the Med Surge using the nursing process in accordance with applicable scope and standards of practice.

Patient Populations Served: Neonate, Infant, Early Childhood, Late Childhood, Adolescent, Young Adult, Middle Adult, Older Adult.

How you'll contribute

A Med Surge RN who excels in this role:

  • Performs initial and ongoing assessments of patient's condition.
  • Establishes a plan of care which is appropriate to problems identified and involves the patient according to his or her capabilities and desires.
  • Supervises and mentors nursing and support staff during assigned shift.
  • Assists in determining staffing levels and assignments based on staff availability, staff abilities, census, patient acuity and work/patient flow.
  • Provides direct patient care as needed.
  • Floats between staff to assist with problem-solving.
  • Takes patient assignments to meet staffing needs.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of patient care and identifies any issues that affect desired patient outcomes.
  • Responds to complaints about patient care and related services, and manages through established channels.
  • Performs role-specific duties as assigned, including entering orders, performing admissions or discharges, and coordinating transfers.
  • Ensures staff has necessary equipment and supplies to provide safe, quality patient care.
