Responsibilities

• Carry out hospital/nursing policies and standards.
• Visit patient care units to assess condition and staffing needs.
• Provide patient care with safety and minimize errors.
• Oversee shift nursing care, supervise LPN and CNA staff.
• Distribute and utilize staff effectively during shifts.
• Coordinate services with departments during shifts.
• Keep CNO/Administrator informed of critical situations.
• Inform staff of patient status and follow-up actions.
• Follow pharmacy protocols when Pharmacist unavailable.
• Act as a resource and represent hospital positively.
• Respond to emergencies until leadership established.
• Fully function in ED RN or Med/Surg RN role as needed.
• Assist CNO and Quality with regulatory requirements.
• Participate in policy development and staff education.

Description

Responsibilities

• Carries out hospital/nursing policies, procedures, and standards.
• Visits all patient care units to ascertain condition of patients, evaluate staffing needs and provide support to caregivers
• Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors
• Oversees nursing care provided on the shift ensuring all staff are working within their scope and providing appropriate supervision of LPN and CNA staff.
• Administers the effective distribution and utilization of staff employed during the respective shift.
• Coordinates and evaluates services rendered by and to all departments during the respective shift on an ongoing basis
• Keeps the Chief Nursing Officer, his/her representative and/or the Administrator informed regarding circumstances or situations which have or may have serious impact.
• Informs staff on ensuing shift regarding condition of patients, follow-up actions required and any special conditions.
• Follows Pharmacy protocols for obtaining drugs when the Pharmacist is unavailable
• Uses good judgment in ensuring adherence to established hospital procedures and policies.
• Acts as a resource and is a positive representation of the hospital to all staff, physicians, patients, and visitors.
• Responds appropriately and directs emergency situations, both clinical and non-clinical in nature until other, formal leadership is established.
• Fully functions in the ED RN role or the Med/Surg RN role when staffing levels dictate the need.
• Assists the Chief Nursing Officer and the Director of Quality with ensuring regulatory requirements are maintained.
• Participates in policy development and staff education as requested by CNO.

Position Requirements

The Nursing House Supervisor is responsible for promoting and maintaining quality patient care through effective management of the activities of the total patient care services during his/her assigned shift. In the absence of the Administrator and/or designee, the Nursing House Supervisor has the authority and responsibility for administrative decisions and appropriate notification of the Administrator-on-Call.
