Job description

The Department of Veterans Affairs is seeking a Registered Nurse for the Quality and Patient Safety Team in Batavia, NY.

Duties

The Infection Preventionist (IP) Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for all elements of the nursing process when providing and supervising infection control practices. They assess, plan, implement, and evaluate infection control practices based on age-specific components. The RN assumes responsibility for coordinating care focused on education, self-management, and customer satisfaction throughout the continuum of care. They follow procedures per established policies and guidelines and influence care outcomes by collaborating with interdisciplinary team members. The RN demonstrates leadership, experience, and creative approaches to managing complex infection control situations.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Developing and implementing infection control policies.
  • Monitoring infection rates and reporting findings.
  • Educating staff and patients on infection prevention practices.
Requirements
Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
  • English Language Proficiency: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7403(f), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless proficient in basic written and spoken English.
  • Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing by ACEN or CCNE; or enrolled in a master's level bridge program with completion of coursework equivalent to a bachelor's degree in Nursing; or foreign nursing graduates with current, unrestricted registration.
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a professional nurse in the U.S. or its territories or the District of Columbia.

Note: Grandfathering provision applies to current VHA employees performing the duties as of 01/29/2024.

Preferred Experience:
  • BSN highly preferred
  • 3-5 years RN experience in various clinical settings
  • Infection Prevention experience
  • Knowledge of infection prevention principles and regulations
  • Excellent communication skills, including staff education
  • Proficiency in data collection, analysis, and reporting related to infection surveillance
Physical and Environmental Requirements

Position involves lifting, standing, sitting, bending, walking, climbing, reaching, pulling, pushing, repetitive motions, and stooping. Mental requirements include reasoning, problem-solving, recall, and sensory functions. The environment may be fast-paced, noisy, and require use of PPE to prevent exposure to hazards.
